SS ARIOSTO - DAMAGED STERN

Wilson Line steamer ARIOSTO Seen here off Deptford Power Station in 1957

A member of her crew that day writes "The stern damage sustained in 1957 was due to violent contact with the dolphin at St Katherine's Dock entrance lock when we had to take emergency action to avoid a serious collision with a flat-iron. We had just cleared Tower Bridge in fairly thick fog, to meet a flat-iron heading for an up-steam power station going flat out with the tide and intent on passing Tower Bridge via the centre arch. The stern plates went into the Thames and were never recovered"
